Churches and Traditions in Maramures

Itinerary

• Day 1. Baia Mare

  Group meeting in Baia Mare. After check in, you will have a short guided tour in the city center, before dinner. Accommodation and dinner at Carpati 4* Hotel or similar in Baia Mare.

• Day 2. The Wooden Churches

  Buffet breakfast at Hotel. In the first part of the day we will visit the wooden churches included in the UNESCO world heritage. Surdesti and Plopis will be the first two visits. In Cavnic - an old resort and a mining city - we will stop for a short visit and for lunch. After lunch we head the village of Breb, where a foundation owned by Prince Charles is maintaining and preserving the cultural life of the village. You can see old watermills still working. In Budesti we will visit another wooden church. Before evening, we visit two historical places in Sighetu Marmatiei: Elie Wisel Museum and the Communism Victims Memorial - a place where visitors can understand what communism meant in Romania. Before dinner we will also have a walk tour of the city. Accommodation and dinner at Casa Iurca 4* Hotel or similar in Sighetu Marmatiei.

• Day 3. Iza River Valley

  Buffet breakfast at Hotel. Today we will follow the beautiful Iza River valley - one of the most beautiful scenery in Maramures. We will visit Barsana wooden Monastery - another UNESCO objective. Another two wooden churches are located at Poienile Izei and at Ieud. Afternoon we will leave Iza River and we will arrive at Viseu. Before evening we will also visit an Ukrainian minority village. This small village, hidden in the mountains, is keeping the traditions of Ukrainian minority. Accommodation and dinner at Nagy 3* pension or similar in Viseu.

• Day 4. One day on Vaser River Valley with the Steam Train

  Early breakfast before heading to Viseu train station for an unforgettable experience - a trip with an old steam train. The little train will lead us along Vaser River into the mountain, like 100 years ago. The scenery deserve every minute of the trip. Back in Viseu, we are visiting again the beautiful city of Sighetu Marmatiei, Accommodation and dinner at the same hotel.

• Day 5. Ancient traditions in Maramures

  Buffet breakfast at Hotel. In the morning we are visiting the Ethnographic Maramures Museum, a place where we can view local traditional houses, traditional costumes and old objects. We will also visit the Merry Cemetery in Sapanta, a unique place in Europe, due the local habit the deceased people are remembered by the community. In Sapanta we will find the highest wooden church. Before lunch we are heading to another cultural area - Oas region. We will visit the Oas Museum, and we will visit a sheepfold, where we will have a traditional lunch. In Certeze we will visit traditional crafts and we will finish the day in Satu Mare. Accommodation and farewell dinner at Poesis 4* Hotel or similar in Satu Mare.

• Day 6. Return to Baia Mare. End of Tour

  Buffet breakfast at Hotel. In the morning we will have a walk tour of the city. Then we are heading Baia Mare for ending the tour. Depending the participants’ schedule we can visit other objectives in the city or you will be transferred to the airport or to other cities. End of tour.
